Visualise Your Success: Picture yourself crossing the finish line with triumph written all over your face. I find it useful to create a mental movie of my perfect race day and replaying it in your mind, over and over again. By focusing on positive outcomes and preparing for any challenges that may arise, you'll boost your confidence and banish those negative thoughts.

Find Your Optimal Zone: Dr. Jen Gapin Farrell suggests tuning into your body to discover your optimal aroused state, focused, strong, full of energy, yet calm. Whether you need to be calm or pumped up, reflect on past races to identify what works best for you. Techniques like deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation can help you reach that sweet spot, leaving you feeling energised and focused.

Embrace and Release Negative Thoughts: Negative thoughts are just passing clouds in the sky of your mind. Acknowledge these thoughts without letting them hold power over you. Accept them, bid them farewell, and shift your focus to the task at hand: dominating the race. Make a decision to release negative thinking, you are in control.

Start Your Mental Routine Early: Your race-day routine begins well before the starting line. Think about the pre-race rituals that have worked for you in the past. Consider incorporating relaxation techniques, getting into that quiet contemplative state. Some athletes use music, seclusion or meditation. Practice breathing exercises, visualisation, and mental cues (how you might feel, how you will react) in the days leading up to the race to refine your personal routine and set yourself up for success. Practise this.

Cherish every moment of the race, it is the culmination of all your hard work.  Focus on the joy of competition and the thrill of pushing your limits, being the best you can be. Instead of fixating on the end result, revel in the process and relish the opportunity to showcase your hard work and dedication.
